The story behind the eye

Seeing through uncertainty

Every element of this mark carries meaning rooted in actuarial science, the art of quantifying the unknown.

Element 01

The Eye Foresight and vision

Actuaries look into the future: assessing risks, projecting cash flows, and quantifying what others cannot see. The eye is the most universal symbol of vision and foresight.

In actuarial work, we don't just react to the present. We model the future: mortality rates, lapse behaviour, claim frequencies. We see what hasn't happened yet, and we price it.

“The actuary's job is to see clearly into a fog that others cannot even perceive.”

Element 02

The Lids The normal curve

The upper lid is the bell curve of the normal distribution, centred on the mean; the lower lid is its mirror image. The eye is literally shaped by the distribution behind most of our models.

Most outcomes gather near the middle, and the tails thin out towards the corners of the eye. The lids meet nearly three standard deviations from the centre, where almost nothing is left to see.

“Uncertainty has a shape. Ours is drawn around the eye.”

Element 03

The Fading Rings Confidence intervals

Four rings around the pupil, fading as they move outward: the 80%, 90%, 95% and 99% intervals. The centre is certain; the edges are unknown. This is the mathematical language of probability.

We never give a single answer without the range of uncertainty around it. A reserve is not a point, it is a distribution, and the rings are that distribution. None of them crosses the lids: every interval stays inside what the eye can see.

“Certainty lives at the centre. The further you go from the mean, the more the world fades into possibility.”

Element 04

The Pupil The point estimate

A single solid dot at the centre: the best estimate, μ. Surrounded by uncertainty, yet precise. This is what actuaries deliver: one number, carefully calculated, that represents the most likely outcome.

Whether it is a reserve figure, a premium rate or a projected cash flow, the actuary's output is a point estimate. The pupil is that point: small, precise and committed amid the unknown.

“Amid infinite possibility, we commit to one answer. That is the courage of the actuary.”

Element 05

Black & White The unknown future

No colour, only light and shadow. White is certainty, the known present. Black is the unknown future. The space between them is where actuarial work lives: between what we know and what we must estimate.

Colour would suggest false confidence. Black and white is honest: the future is not colourful and certain, but a spectrum from light to dark, from known to unknown. That is why the mark flips cleanly between light and dark themes on this site.

“We do not pretend to know the future. We quantify how dark the darkness might be.”

A mark that means something

This logo is not decoration. It is a statement: every number has uncertainty, every estimate has a range, and every actuary sees what others cannot. The lids give uncertainty its shape. The rings remind us of what we don't know. The pupil commits to what we do.
